The postcard treats the 1905 Portsmouth peace talks as a stage drama, with the Russian czar, President Theodore Roosevelt and the Japanese emperor, here called the Mikado, as its players. Roosevelt had offered to mediate after the Russo-Japanese War, and the talks in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, produced the treaty that ended the fighting in September 1905. He received the Nobel Peace Prize for that work in 1906. Cards like this one show how closely the American public followed the negotiations.
