Few souvenirs from 1905 capture a diplomatic turning point as directly as this postcard, which gathers portraits of the envoys who met in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, to end the Russo-Japanese War. The talks were held at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard that summer, and the treaty was signed in early September after President Theodore Roosevelt urged both sides to negotiate. Roosevelt received the 1906 Nobel Peace Prize for his role, which gives the card added weight as a reminder that an American president helped shape the settlement. Picture postcards like this were popular at the time and show how closely the public followed foreign affairs.
