The Portsmouth Peace Conference took place in late summer 1905 at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, on the Maine side of the Piscataqua River, where delegates from Russia and Japan met under American mediation. Theodore Roosevelt's government arranged the talks, and Roosevelt later received the Nobel Peace Prize for his part. The treaty signed there on September 5, 1905, ended the Russo-Japanese War. The record gives no date for this plate, so the negative is best read as a document of the wider conference, made by the Bain News Service, which supplied such news photographs to American newspapers.
