The caption's invitation, "And climb aboard," points to the moment of boarding itself rather than a parade or a parade-ground drill, and the record places the scene at the New York Port of Embarkation sometime between 1942 and 1945. The Army ran the port to send troops and supplies overseas, and during those years large numbers of American servicemen passed through its piers in Manhattan, Brooklyn and across the Hudson in Hoboken, New Jersey, on their way to ships bound for Europe and the Pacific. Pictures like this one capture the crowded final stage of that journey, when soldiers left American soil.
