This panoramic gelatin silver print of Rust Camp at the Grand Canyon is a long, narrow view, about 35 inches wide, that takes in the camp and the canyon beyond it. It was registered for copyright on August 2, 1909, by the West Coast Art Co. of Los Angeles, a firm that issued many scenic views of western landmarks. In 1909 the Grand Canyon was a national monument, and visitors reached the rim by rail and stage. Camps like this one offered them shelter near the edge, so the picture also records how tourism was shaping the South Rim.
