Flowers tucked into the sitter's hair give this 1844 portrait a lighter, more personal touch than the stiff formal poses common in early studio work. As a daguerreotype, it is a single image on a polished silvered copper plate that reflects like a mirror when viewed at the right angle. Exposures in the 1840s could take several seconds or more in good light, so the sitter had to hold still, and the fine detail in the petals and hair is one of the process's signature strengths. Because each daguerreotype is a unique object, surviving examples like this one offer a direct glimpse of how people chose to present themselves in the years after the process was announced in 1839.
