A daguerreotype from 1844 gives us a woman wearing a lace shawl and a cross necklace, the lace and jewelry rendered in the sharp, mirror-like detail that made the process famous. Daguerreotypes were made on silvered copper plates, each one a single unique image that had to be viewed at an angle to show its positive tone. By the mid-1840s the process had been public for only about five years, and portraits like this one were typically prized as keepsakes, the cross suggesting personal faith as much as fashion. Because the sitter's name is not recorded here, the picture rewards close looking at textiles and dress as a window onto middle-class life of the period.
