The record gives us little beyond a dark-haired woman sitting for a daguerreotype in 1844, so the picture's particulars have to come from the process itself. Daguerreotypes were made on silvered copper plates, each one a unique image with no negative, and sitters often had to hold still for several minutes in strong light. That long exposure is why many early portraits look so serious, with faces set in calm, unsmiling expressions. Plates of this era were also viewed at an angle under a case or mat, where the mirror-like surface could shift from positive to negative depending on where the light fell.
