Few things capture the earliest days of photography quite like a daguerreotype, and this 1840 portrait of a woman arrives in its original case, a detail that matters as much as the image itself. Daguerreotypes were made on silvered copper plates, so the picture is a single mirror-like positive that can only be seen clearly at certain angles, and the hinged case protected that delicate surface from scratches and tarnish. Portraits from around 1840 were expensive, long-exposure affairs, so sitters often held still for minutes and were usually people of some means. Looking closely, you can notice the sharp detail of fabric and hair that the process rendered so well.
