Catalogued simply as *Painting*, this gouache is dated 1937 or 1938 and is linked in its record to exhibitions staged by the Federal Art Project in New York. The project was one of the arts programs of the Works Progress Administration, created in 1935 to employ out-of-work artists, and it mounted shows across the city that put painters, designers and printmakers before the public. The record is still unprocessed, so the artist and the specific exhibition are not yet documented. Its medium and bright color still reflect the wide range of work the project's artists produced during the 1930s.
