Budapest in the years before 1923 was a city still settling into its modern form, having been formed only in 1873 from the joined towns of Buda, Pest and Óbuda across the Danube. The Frank and Frances Carpenter Collection, from which this print comes, was assembled by a husband-and-wife team of American travel writers and photographers who documented countries and cities around the world for lecture and publication. Their Hungarian material captures a capital that was then the second city of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, with its bridges, parliament and broad boulevards drawing attention from visitors. Look closely at the streets and skyline for signs of the late imperial era.
