The title names Lützen, a town in Saxony that was the site of two major battles: the 1632 engagement in the Thirty Years' War, where the Swedish king Gustavus Adolphus was killed, and the 1813 clash between Napoleon's forces and a Russian and Prussian coalition. The caption card gives no date, so the record does not show which battle is depicted. The engraving is by Audibran after a drawing by Raffet, the French artist known for scenes of military life in the Napoleonic era. Steel engraving allowed finer tonal detail and larger print runs than copper, which is worth keeping in mind when comparing it with earlier battle prints.
