Sam Rayburn, the Texas congressman who served as Speaker of the House for much of the mid-twentieth century, is the figure at the center of this portrait. The print was made by Chase Studios, Ltd., a Washington, D.C., firm that produced photographs of officeholders and public figures for use by newspapers, agencies and the public. Rayburn held the speakership for more than 17 years in total, the longest tenure in the office's history, and he was known for his skill at building consensus behind closed doors. The caption card does not record a date, so the exact year the picture was taken remains unconfirmed.
