Few titles on this board are as informal as *Couchies*, a word that hints at a relaxed, everyday moment rather than a formal likeness. The print is a soft-ground etching, a technique that lets the artist press in textures such as pencil strokes or fabric, giving the surface a grainy, drawn quality unlike sharper line engraving. The record gives no date, but it notes the pencil signature and a 1970 catalog of American prints in the Library of Congress that documents the work. Soft-ground etching was popular with American printmakers around the turn of the twentieth century, so the piece likely comes from that era.
