A halftone portrait of Crispus Attucks, dated around 1897, presents the man whose death made him a central figure of the Boston Massacre, which took place on March 5, 1770, outside the Old State House. Halftone reproduction, new in the 1890s, let publishers print photographic likenesses cheaply in books and periodicals, and this sheet was copyrighted by W.H. Curd of Chicago. No verified likeness of Attucks survives from his lifetime, so such late-nineteenth-century portraits were usually later imaginings shaped by the period's interest in him as a patriot and a symbol of early resistance.
