Snow and bare trees give this view of the White House a hushed quality that sets it apart from the sunnier scenes on this board. The print belongs to the National Photo Company Collection, a body of views made by a commercial firm that photographed Washington's buildings largely for postcards and souvenirs. Its catalog date falls between 1909 and 1932, a span covering the presidencies of Taft through Hoover, when the executive mansion was a familiar subject for the public and for postcard makers alike.
