This halftone ran on the front page of The Sunday Star on December 2, 1928, under a headline asking what would become of the White House pets once the Coolidges left. The Coolidge household was known for its animals, which included dogs, cats and other pets that drew frequent press attention, so the question was a natural one for a Washington paper to raise. Calvin Coolidge's term was ending that winter, and Herbert Hoover was due to take office in March 1929. The article reflects how closely the public followed the private lives of presidential families, and how much the animals had become part of the White House story.
