Arras Cathedral, the seat of the bishopric in the northern French town of Arras, is the subject here, and the record gives no date. The title comes from caption information supplied by the Bain News Service, a New York photo agency that sold news pictures from about 1899 to 1932, so it has not been independently verified. Arras lay near the Western Front during the First World War, and the town and its major churches suffered heavy damage from shelling, which makes any image of the cathedral from those years worth examining closely. Because the negative is a glass plate, its tonal detail can be sharp, but its exact date should be confirmed before the picture is used as evidence.
