Verdun's cathedral, Notre-Dame de Verdun, is the subject of this glass negative from the George Grantham Bain Collection. The city sat at the center of the 1916 Battle of Verdun, one of the longest and bloodiest fights of the First World War, and its churches and public buildings suffered heavy shelling during the campaign. The Bain News Service, a New York picture agency, catalogued the plate, but its caption cards give no date, and the title rests on unverified notes, so the identification should be read as likely rather than certain.
