The entrance to the Archbishop's Palace is what distinguishes this glass negative, though the title comes from caption cards that the Bain News Service wrote and that have not been independently verified. Verdun sits on the Meuse River in northeastern France, a town of old churches and episcopal buildings that became synonymous with the 1916 battle, one of the longest and costliest of the First World War. The Bain News Service, a New York agency that sold news pictures to newspapers, produced many views of European places during this period. The negative carries no date, so the exact moment it was taken remains uncertain.
