The record gives this glass negative the title "Serbian Colonel at Salonica," though the Bain News Service supplied that title without verification, and no date is recorded. Salonica, the Greek port now called Thessaloniki, became a major Allied base during the First World War. After Serbia's army retreated across the mountains of Albania in the winter of 1915 and 1916, many Serbian troops were regrouped there. The Bain News Service, a New York agency that sold news photographs to newspapers, documented such wartime scenes.
