A porter at work in a subway setting is the particular subject here, a worker whose job kept the new underground transit system running for passengers. The record does not date the negative, but the Bain News Service, the New York photo agency founded by George Grantham Bain around 1899, supplied news pictures to newspapers in the early twentieth century, when New York's subway, which opened in 1904, was a major public novelty. Glass negatives like this one show the detail and tonal range that made such pictures useful to editors. Because the title comes from the agency's own unverified notes, the specific location and the worker's identity remain open questions.
