Little is recorded about the Blackton family beyond the title, which the Bain News Service attached to the negative or its caption card and which has not been independently verified. The picture belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, a body of glass negatives from the Bain News Service, a New York agency that supplied news and feature photographs to newspapers in the early twentieth century. With the sitters and date unknown, the image is best read as an example of that commercial press work, with its small glass plates and fast, practical picture-making, rather than as a record of a known event.
