The caption on this glass negative gives only the initial and surname "S. Blackton," and the record notes that even this title comes from unverified data on the negative sleeve or caption card. The name may point to J. Stuart Blackton, the British-born film pioneer who co-founded the Vitagraph studio, but the record does not confirm that. The Bain News Service was a New York agency that sold news photographs to newspapers in the early twentieth century, and it worked mostly with glass plates like this one, which were prized for their sharp detail before roll film became standard.
