The only name attached to this glass negative is "S. Blackton," a title the Bain News Service recorded from caption cards, and the Library of Congress lists it as unverified. The name most often linked to early American film is J. Stuart Blackton, co-founder of the Vitagraph studio, but the record does not confirm any such connection. Bain News Service was a New York picture agency that supplied newspapers with photographs of people and events in the early twentieth century, and its glass plates show the character of press photography from that period.
