The only name attached to this negative is W.J. Reilly, and the record gives no date, so the identification rests on a title the Bain News Service wrote on its caption cards, which the Library of Congress has not verified. The plate is a 5 x 7 inch or smaller glass negative, the format the agency used for everyday work. Founded in New York around 1899, Bain News Service supplied newspapers and magazines with photographs of people, events and street scenes, and its glass plates now form one of the largest early-twentieth-century news picture collections in the United States. Looking at the plate is a reminder of how news photographs were made and circulated before the wire-photo era.
