Dutch arrivals are the subject of this view, taken at Ellis Island, the New York Harbor station that processed a large share of incoming immigrants from 1892 until the mid-1950s. It is a glass negative from the George Grantham Bain Collection, made by the Bain News Service, a New York agency that supplied pictures to newspapers in the early twentieth century. The record offers no firm date, and the title rests on unverified notes, so the family's identity is unknown. The scene still captures the inspections and waiting that marked arrival there for millions of Europeans.
