Taken in Washington a few weeks into the Harding administration, this glass negative records Edwin Denby, who had recently become Secretary of the Navy when the sitting was made on March 15, 1921. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio active in the early twentieth century, documented many officials and newsworthy figures of the period, and its negatives later came to the Library of Congress. Because the negative is on glass, it shows streaks and blemishes from the gradual breakdown of its original coating, which is worth keeping in mind when judging the image.
