Taken just days before Edwin Denby entered office as Secretary of the Navy, this glass negative captures a Washington figure at the start of a new post. The National Photo Company, a Washington firm that documented the city's political and social life in the early twentieth century, made the exposure, and its record dates it to March 2, 1921, two days before the Harding administration began. Denby, a former Michigan congressman, later led the Navy through the Teapot Dome years that drew national attention. The negative shows streaks and blemishes from deterioration of its original coating, which give the image a faint, weathered texture.
