A group of newspapermen is pictured with a man named Denby on January 29, 1924, a title the National Photo Company wrote on the negative. That name most likely refers to Edwin Denby, who was then Secretary of the Navy, though the record does not confirm it. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio that recorded officials and public life in the early twentieth century, made the negative, which reached the Library of Congress as a 1947 gift from Herbert A. French. Streaks and blemishes on the glass come from the natural deterioration of its original coatings.
