An eagle, the national emblem, is the central figure in this 1917 lithograph, which answers a call for "more ships." The Emergency Fleet Corporation, formed under the United States Shipping Board that year, was charged with building merchant vessels after the United States entered World War I in April 1917, when German submarine attacks were sinking Allied cargo ships and straining Atlantic supply routes. Posters like this one were part of a broader home-front campaign to rally public support, and the war bond appeals listed in its subject headings show how closely shipbuilding and war financing were linked.
