Painter Jonas Lie, a Norwegian-born American best known for his Panama Canal scenes, signed this 1918 lithograph and inscribed it to the Library of Congress, a personal gift that sets it apart from many mass-produced wartime posters. It was issued under the sponsorship of the United States Shipping Board Emergency Fleet Corporation, a federal agency created in 1917 to build merchant ships after German submarine attacks disrupted Allied shipping. The poster ties the work of building vessels to the war effort, and its focus on men on the job reflects the rapid growth of shipyard labor during those years.
