The sidewise launch of the 3,500-ton S.S. *Lady Janet* at the Great Lakes Engineering Company's yard in Ecorse, Michigan, on July 4, 1918, gives this poster its specific occasion. In a sidewise launch, the hull slid off the ways broadside into the water, a method suited to yards with limited room along the river. The poster was drawn by the illustrator Joseph Pennell and printed as a color lithograph by Ketterlinus of Philadelphia for the United States Shipping Board's Emergency Fleet Corporation, which was working to replace merchant tonnage lost to German submarines. Its title, "Launching another victory ship," presents each completed hull as a wartime success on the home front.
