This recruiting image carries the slogan "Comme toujours nous y sommes," or "As always, we are there," in the name of the 178th Battalion, a French-speaking Canadian unit. The phrase presents military service as a long-standing French-Canadian tradition, and it was aimed at men who might answer a call to serve in their own language. Wartime recruitment in Quebec often leaned on this kind of appeal, because enlistment there was tangled up with questions of language, religion and loyalty to Britain and Canada. Posters like this one show how the army tried to make service feel familiar to francophone men.
