Here the farm serves as a metaphor: the planting and harvest are behind it, and the land has settled into the stillness of late autumn or winter, much as an old age does. Allegorical series like *The Four Seasons of Life* mapped the farm year onto a human life, with spring for youth, summer for vigor, autumn for maturity, and winter for rest. Such scenes were popular with nineteenth-century viewers, who read them as moral lessons about aging as well as views of rural work.
