This engraving is a bank note vignette, an ornamental scene meant to decorate paper currency, and a proof pulled from the plate before printing. It was made in New York in 1856 by Toppan, Carpenter & Co., a firm known for engraving and printing notes for banks across the country. Its title, "Youth and age," and its tags for country life, children and adults, and horses point to an allegorical rural scene in which generations and farm work stand in for ideas about time and prosperity. Banknote vignettes of this kind were often engraved by hand with fine lines, so the proof shows the plate's detail before it was used for printing.
