This color lithograph shows the Assabet Manufacturing Company's mill complex in Maynard, Massachusetts, drawn from an elevated angle that lets the viewer take in the factory buildings, yards, and the river beside them. Maynard was a mill village on the Assabet River west of Boston, and it took its present name in 1871, when the village was incorporated and renamed. Bird's-eye views like this one were especially popular in the 1870s, when American towns and businesses commissioned detailed pictures to show off their growth. Printed in Boston by J.C. Hazen and drawn by the lithographer C.H. Vogt, the view is a useful record of how a New England factory town was laid out during the industrial boom.
