Timothy Dexter's High Street mansion in Newburyport, Massachusetts, is the subject here, shown as it appeared around 1810, a few years before Dexter's death in 1806 would have been widely remembered. Dexter, a self-made merchant who had become wealthy through a run of unlikely speculations, filled his grounds with eccentric statuary and inscriptions, and the print's crowd of onlookers reflects how much visitors came to gawk at the place. Although the lithograph was made by J.H. Bufford in Boston in the 1840s, it looks back to the earlier scene, which helps explain its interest as a record of a local curiosity.
