The title "Stowell group" points to a gathering of people, but the record does not identify the Stowells or the occasion, and the label itself is unverified. The negative comes from the National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., studio whose glass plates, dated between 1910 and 1925, recorded the nation's capital, its public life, and its residents. Large glass negatives like this one capture fine detail, but the coating has begun to streak and blemish, a common result of age. The plate entered the Library of Congress as a gift from Herbert A. French in 1947.
