A group portrait made for staff associated with a periodical called Labor Magazine, the title taken from notes on the negative sleeve by the National Photo Company, whose Washington studio recorded many organizations and public figures in the early twentieth century. Because the title is unverified, the sitters and the occasion remain uncertain, though the date range falls within the company's busiest years. The plate is a glass negative, and its streaks and blemishes come from the natural breakdown of the original coatings, a reminder of how fragile these records can be. The negative entered the Library of Congress as a gift from Herbert A. French in 1947.
