The Statue of Liberty, shown against a sunrise or sunset, anchors this 1917 watercolor poster urging viewers to own a Liberty Bond. The United States had entered World War I that April, and the government financed the war in part through Liberty Loan campaigns sold directly to ordinary citizens. Posters like this one, with patriotic symbols such as the statue and the flag, were a major part of those drives, which tried to make buying bonds feel like a civic duty. Eugenie DeLand's painted design shows how artists turned a financial appeal into an image of national pride.
