Joseph Joachim Raff, the composer shown here, is less widely known today than his large body of work deserves. Born in 1822 in Lachen, near Lake Zurich, he spent formative years in Weimar close to Franz Liszt before becoming director of the Hoch Conservatory in Frankfurt in 1878, the year this portrait is dated. The picture was reproduced as a halftone in John Knowles Paine's 1891 volume *Famous Composers*, from a photoprint credited to Mondel & Jacob. The caption information is old and unverified, so the attribution is worth checking against other sources.
