Joseph Lane, the Oregon politician and Mexican War general, is the subject here, and the caption card credits the photoprint to Mathew Brady. Lane served as the first territorial governor of Oregon before representing the state in the U.S. Senate, and in 1860 he ran for vice president on the Southern Democratic ticket with John C. Breckinridge. Brady's studios sold portraits of prominent men like Lane to the public, helping to build a shared visual record of national leaders in the years before the Civil War. The caption card gives no date, so the exact timing of the portrait remains uncertain.
