Kultur" takes its title from the word that American and Allied commentators used to describe German militarism, which by 1915 had become a shorthand for the whole war. Nelson Harding, a cartoonist best known for his work at the Brooklyn Daily Eagle, drew the piece as commentary on the bombardment of European towns, a subject that filled newspapers during the war years. The lithograph is signed by the artist on the stone, and a stamp in the lower left shows it later passed through a Munich collection, a reminder that wartime imagery circulated widely on both sides of the Atlantic.
