New Salem, the Illinois village where Abraham Lincoln lived in the 1830s, is the setting this picture is tied to, and that makes it more specific than a general portrait of the president. Lincoln arrived there in 1831 at age 22, working as a clerk, a store operator, a postmaster and a surveyor before he began his law practice and political career. Reconstructed log buildings and historic-site grounds now mark the village, which was largely abandoned after the 1830s, so images of it often show the rustic frontier life that shaped his early years.
