Rather than a photograph or lithograph, this print is a mezzotint, a tonal engraving process that builds soft gradations of light and shadow, which suited a solemn deathbed scene. It was painted and engraved by A.H. Ritchie and issued around 1875, a decade after the event it depicts. The subject is the death of Abraham Lincoln, who was shot at Ford's theater in Washington on April 14, 1865, and died the next morning in the Petersen House across the street. This is a second impression, and its large sheet shows a tear below the image.
