Here a Scottish author appears alongside a dog and a fire, rendered in Japanese woodcut, a combination that points to a well-known episode in Thomas Carlyle's career. In 1835 the manuscript of the first volume of his history of the French Revolution was lost in a fire, a setback he had to recover from by rewriting much of the work. Carlyle was an essayist and historian whose writing shaped Victorian thinking about history and heroism. Prints like this one show how Western people and stories reached Japanese artists in the mid-nineteenth century.
