A red parasol and a writing box make an unusual pairing for a Japanese print, since the subject is domestic and quiet rather than a famous landscape or actor portrait. The sketch's ink work is what draws the eye: the parasol's ribs and the edges of the lacquered box are drawn with a few confident strokes, leaving much of the paper bare. Japanese artists of this period often used such still-life studies to practice line and to record everyday objects of elegant city life, and a parasol like this one would have signaled fashion and a measure of leisure. Looking closely, you can see how the artist lets empty space do much of the work.
