Motorcycle police lead the way in the foreground while the casket moves past the U.S. Capitol dome, a view that captures the ceremonial route taken through Washington on April 14, 1945. Franklin D. Roosevelt had died two days earlier at Warm Springs, Georgia, after serving as president for more than 12 years, the longest tenure of any president. The photograph was distributed by Black Star, a photo agency known for its wartime and postwar news pictures. It shows how the capital marked the loss of a leader who had guided the country through the Great Depression and most of World War II.
