A horse-drawn caisson carrying the casket of Franklin D. Roosevelt moves along Pennsylvania Avenue in this print, a scene of the national mourning that followed his death at Warm Springs, Georgia, on April 12, 1945. The Library of Congress catalog dates the picture to April 24, 1945, though the Washington services for the president were held in mid-April. Military escorts and crowds lining the route reflected the grief of a nation that had known no other wartime president. Roosevelt was buried in the rose garden at his family estate in Hyde Park, New York, days after the capital ceremonies. The image is a useful record of how the funeral was staged as a public event.
